The second annual Virginia Horse Festival will be held April 1-3 at The Meadow Event Park in Caroline County.
This horse lover's festival will have something for experienced horse owners and riders, new horse owners, hobbyists, dog lovers and those with a taste for Western wear, boots and jewelry. The three-day event includes clinics, demonstrations, the Colt Starting Challenge USA, the statewide 4-H EquiSmartz competition and dog agility demonstrations.
“This event is ideal for the whole family and includes three days of learning, shopping and absorbing all things equine-related," said Glenn Martin, the festival's program manager.
The festival will kick off with the Colt Starting Challenge USA, where contestants compete to gentle and ride a previously unridden horse. As contestants work with their horses, they explain to the audience what they're doing and why. On the second day, trainers and their horses are put to the test through a judged obstacle course to determine the winner.
The EquiSmartz competition tests 4-H participants’ knowledge of horses and ponies. District competitions are held throughout the year and will culminate with the state-level contest at the festival.
Throughout the weekend, there also will be a variety of clinics and classes offered. Additionally, a special display honoring the Meadow’s legendary horse, Secretariat, will be part of the festival. The 1973 Triple Crown champion was born on the property on March 30, 1970.
The Central Virginia Agility Club will provide dog agility demonstrations as well. All seminars, clinics, demonstrations and nightly entertainment are free to observe with a paid admission.
