July 10, 2006 — Sarah Chovnick and Late Entry couldn’t have had better timing as their top ribbons and the 38 points they collected clinched the small junior, 15 and under, championship at the HITS Showday National in Culpeper, Va.
Chovnick, 15, of Middleburg, Va., and Prime Time Show Stables’ Holsteiner topped a competitive field of juniors for the tricolor honors at the second installment on the 2006 HITS Culpeper circuit, July 5-9.
“He was such a good boy,” said Chovnick, who hugged her bay gelding while trainer Ginny Edwards pinned the championship ribbon to his bridle.
“He is the perfect junior hunter,” added Edwards. “He’s beautiful, a great jumper and a wonderful mover. He also thinks he’s a pet. He just loves his people and loves attention.”
Edwards, of Hidden Hollow in Upperville, Va., praised Chovnick for her consistent rides aboard Late Entry over the weekend. “She’s really learning to ride him well. I would have given her an 88 in her last class. There are a few little things she can do to improve to a 96—she’s just so close to achieving that perfect jump with him,” explained Edwards.
In addition to his junior hunter accolades, Late Entry has made a name for himself in the second year green division this year. With professional rider Sandy Ferrell, he won the $45,200 AHJF Hunter Classic Spectacular of Palm Beach, the most prestigious hunter title on the Winter Equestrian Festival circuit in Wellington, Fla.
Chovnick’s rides aboard Late Entry on Sunday afternoon capped her busy weekend. In addition to her top performances in the junior hunters, Chovnick debuted her new equitation horse, Harrison, and placed fourth with Njordoctro in a high junior/amateur-owner jumper class.
Aboard Harrison, Chovnick topped the VHSA Flat Medal after judge Robert Bielefeld had the riders work at length without stirrup irons. He gradually called riders into the center of the ring until Chovnick and Kacy Jenkins remained on the rail. Chovnick’s final counter canter proved best, and she left the ring with the blue ribbon.
Chovnick was pleased with Harrison, a former jumper, who has now made a career shift to the equitation ring. “He was great,” she said. “We thought he’d be an excellent equitation horse because he’s so scopey and has a solid flatwork foundation. We have things to work on, but I’m really happy that he went so well.”
