On July 11, 2006 Ashley Thompson, a kind and talented, life long horse woman of 22 years, suffered a traumatic brain injury when the horse she was riding suddenly and without warning stumbled and fell on top of her. She was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General’s trauma unit where she underwent emergency brain surgery. The doctors and paramedics who saw her that day had serious doubts as to whether or not Ashley would survive this horrible injury. In the accident, Ashley also suffered dozens of facial fractures, extensive damage to her right eye, and a lacerated spleen. Miraculously, with the help of wonderful doctors, nurses, therapists, and the prayers and support of wonderful friends, Ashley made amazing progress every day in the hospital until she was eventually released to return home where she is continuing her long recovery. Ashley was one of the lucky ones, she will live to ride again one day. We have been inspired by Ashley’s story to help others to ride safe for life. A benefit horse show and silent auction is being held at Sterling Meadows Farm, in Virgina Beach on September 23 and 24 to raise funds which will help to pay for Ashley’s hospital bills, medications, lost wages, and to help with her recovery. A web site at www.RideSafeForLife.com has been established to provide information on this benefit show and auction. Go to this web site and find out how you can support this cause by donating items to the silent auction or by making monetary donations. Please help us to help not only Ashley, but the whole equestrian community.
