More Great Tips from the Barn Faeries!

Hello, All! The Barn Faeries here again. This week let's cover some basic health tips for your horses, shall we?

* Always keep the phone number for your veterinarian's office posted near the phone and in a couple of places in your barn - especially in your First Aid kit. In an emergency you don't want to lose precious time looking it up!

* Consult your veterinarian for a list of the items your First Aid kit should contain. Most are inexpensive and readily available through your local co-op or discount store. If your horse's favorite doctor recommends keeping any prescription medications on hand, be sure to follow storage instructions carefully and discard any medications that have reached their expiration date.

* Cleanliness is next to healthiness! Scrub feed and water buckets thoroughly and often. Don't forget that buckets used to carry feed to the stalls need to be scrubbed too - as do feed scoops and measures used for supplements. Bright sunlight is a great (and very affordable) disinfectant, so set those freshly scrubbed buckets in the sun for an hour before putting them back in your horse's stall.

* Wash bits after each use and spray with a disinfectant mouthwash to kill germs (especially if the bits are used by more than one horse).

* Attack those dusty cobwebs. Sure it's a nasty job, but your barn will look better and be a much fresher home for your equine pals. Inhaling dust is not good for humans or horses.

Must dash now! See you next week with more Tips from the Barn Faeries!!
