I have a gelding looking for a rider to give him more miles and experience due to my lack of time. Preferably a long term lease, lease options and fees dependent on the right situation.
"Leo" is a 10yo 15.2h Kiger/Thoroughbred cross gelding. He has a lot of potential but has had a slow start due to lack of time on my part. He wasn't really put under saddle until around 6yo and has had inconsistent training since, like several months on and then a month or two off sort of thing. Even with time off he comes back as before, just out of shape. He is naturally athletic and agile and enjoys jumping. He is doing small courses of 2'6" with ease and intro level dressage and mild lateral work. He has schooled 3'6 but only shown at 2'3. Leo is pretty easy to ride, relaxed and consistent, but can be more push than pull typically unless you demand energy at the beginning. As his training goes on he is getting more forward under saddle and really holds himself well. I would still consider him a little inexperienced due to me not having the means to take him out and do more with him and introduce him to new things. I would prefer an intermediate rider with him although he has had beginners on him fairly often for flat lessons and small, easy fences. Leo is an uncomplicated ride 9/10 times, but can get nervous in new situations and need a patient and confident ride then. There is a lot of potential with Leo he just needs more miles under saddle. Pretty straight forward and easy. The main thing to keep in mind when working with Leo is that he is part Kiger Mustang, his sire was caught in a round-up, so the line is strong. This means that Leo has more self preservation and is more sensitive than a lot of other horses. If you think of a sensitive or spooky Thoroughbred, but without the hot nature, then you can imagine Leo at his worst. Again, most times Leo is a very easy horse to ride for someone who is simply an active and focused rider. Focusing on tasks keeps his brain on you and he is a willing partner that is a very enjoyable to ride.
Leo has shown hunters and eventing but has limited show experience. He has also hacked on roads and taken on trails. While Leo is a very uncomplicated ride as far as aids usage, he can be a bit of a wimp and has a playful/sassy personality at times. With fences he needs a slow approach at the beginning but gets more confidence as he goes and will pull to fences and enjoys jumping once his confidence raises. He does not get much jump time with me and my schedule, so being in a regular jump routine will make him flourish over fences. He is an easy and comfortable ride but does have a stop, that you see coming from a mile away, when he is unsure of a "scary" fence. Typical response is a slow stop, sniff, and then reapproach and goes over or jumps from a walk if its not above 2'6". What he needs is someone confident who will have patience as he is introduced to new things until his confidence raises. When in consistent jump work he is significantly more brave and is very much a point and shoot sort of horse. This Summer I shifted the focus to "scary" jump training more and his mindset is progressing from stopping to more of a timid slow down and then going over anyways. He is getting more forward thinking with fences with miles. He has schooled through Novice fences and can even go cross country in a rubber bit. He is well tuned to seat and leg aids and whoas very well with those aids alone. His personality is like a playful puppy, he gets into everything, and is a very easy keeper. Currently barefoot and always has been, eats 1lb of balancer pellet a day with a basic joint supplement added, and only needs a blanket for severe weather/rain in the winter. Goes in a mixed herd and has never been one to bite or kick.
All around Leo is an easy fellow who just needs a stronger/confident ride at times but has all the makings to turn into a complete packer with more experience. If you would like to try Leo or would like more information please email or text/call. Videos available as well.
A video of Leos first jumper show. There was a warmup round directly before the class, where he had been concerned about things, slightly spooky, and wanted to take a peak at almost every fence before jumping. We schooled over each fence before proceeding to the class where I simply took it easy and reserved in the first round. He proved in that first round he wasn't bothered, so I held him back a little less as time went on. He did very well and was confident after just his little warm up in the ring.
