Every Horse Lover Will Want A Copy of This Book

Following the tremendous success of J.C. Suarès’s The Big Book of Cats and The Big Book of Dogs (both now in five languages, with over 175,000 copies in print!), comes The Big Book of Horses. As editor and polo player, Suarès brings his own passion, wit, and artistry to this 384-page compendium of photographs, literary excerpts, poetry, and personal stories.

In this collection of photographs, excerpts, and thirty of J. C.’s own whimsical drawings, The Big Book of Horses illuminates the equine’s status as an ancient symbol of power and mystique. Through toil and war, in dance, poetry, myth, and emotion, the horse’s influence has endured, forever branded on the human psyche. Welcome Books’ third addition to the popular Big Book series examines and celebrates this noble creature and its influence in our literature, our poetry, our sports, and our lives. Filled with the remarkable, the famous, the beautiful, and the bold, it’s a stunning tribute to these majestic animals.

Featured photographers include: Mark J. Barrett, Bob Langrish, Gary Knoll, Jennay Hitesman, Steve Hillebrand, and Kit Houghton. Selections from acclaimed authors including: Leo Tolstoy, Cormac McCarthy, Beryl Markham, John Steinbeck, Nicolas Evans, and J.D. Salinger. Personal stories and anecdotes by: many horse enthusiasts, including Olympic equestrians, directors and judges of horse shows, owners of horse stables, and competitive and recreational riders.

J.C. Suarès is a designer of books, magazines, and newspapers. He has edited and designed three dozen books on animals including The Horse in Sport, The Jockey Club History of Thoroughbred Racing in America, The Rider’s Diary, and From Foal to Champion. Having owned numerous horses, he switched from hunters to polo ponies several years ago and regularly plays outdoor polo in the summer and arena polo in the winter. Not surprisingly, many of this designer/editor’s steeds bear names of typefaces (Bodoni, Calson, Torino); but his favorite will always be Lucas, a tough 22-year-old chestnut who will do anything to win.
