In March 2009, Traveller’s Rest Equine Elders Sanctuary (TREES) joined the Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA) as a founding shelter member.
In Japanese, the word "Reiki" means "spiritual energy." The practice called Reiki involves meditation, focus, and exercises intended to balance energy needed to maintain good physical and mental health. Reiki is used in numerous hospitals to support human patients. The benefits observed can also apply to animals.
SARA’s goals include fostering an understanding of Reiki and promoting an ethical approach to using Reiki with animals. In addition, the association will document the effects of Animal Reiki on individual animals and the possible effects on shelter and rescue statistics as a whole, while serving as a world-wide Reiki information and referral resource for Reiki practitioners, shelters, sanctuaries and other facilities that assist animals in need.
Traveller’s Rest Equine Elders Sanctuary, based in Spotsylvania, VA, offers haven to elder horses, many of whom were victims of neglect or abandonment. As a SARA shelter member, the sanctuary will invite Reiki practitioners who attend a SARA orientation, and who agree to work within SARA guidelines, to work with resident horses to reduce stress and promote physical, mental and emotional healing.
