In the past 17 years the American Hunter-Jumper Foundation has set a standard for the sport of hunters. Having recently made the decision to maintain its independence, now the AHJF is looking ahead to its future with a renewed energy focused on bringing new ideas to the sport of hunters and the people who support it.

"During this past year the AHJF and the USHJA discussed the potential merger of the groups. Following considerable deliberation and discussion, the decision was made to not pursue this direction," said Louise Serio, AHJF Vice President.

"We took a very careful look at the mission and operations of the AHJF and the USHJA and discovered that the two organizations have important yet different roles to play in the improvement of our sport. We believe there is room for both organizations," explained Geoff Teall, AHJF co-founder and President.

The USHJA plays a critical role, especially through the establishment of rules and regulations related to horse shows, horse welfare, and education of various industry segments.

The AHJF's mission is very different. Founded by hunter professionals and owners, the AHJF's first goal was to create an awards program. Once that was successfully accomplished it focused on developing other programs that specifically addressed the urgent needs of the sport. Since its inception in 1992, the AHJF has helped to increase the money won and has raised the visibility of the sport. Yet, the AHJF has never forgotten the importance of rewarding those who are instrumental in keeping the sport of hunters alive by creating programs and opportunities for not only the riders, trainers and owners but also the grooms and others behind the scenes.

Now that the AHJF is approaching its 20th anniversary the organization continues to focus on how it can best address the needs of those involved in the sport of hunters

While the competition programs are the nucleus of the organization, the continued support of its colleagues is critical to the AHJF. Over the past 16 years the AHJF Emergency Relief Fund has supported nearly 50 people in times of need, distributing close to $450,000.

As the AHJF moves forward with renewed energy for refining its existing programs and developing a number of new programs, they are thankful to have a dedicated and active membership which has been instrumental to the success of the organization.

Now that the future of the organization has been affirmed it’s even more important for those who support the sport of hunters to join the AHJF in its efforts by checking that their AHJF membership is active. Only active members can participate in the AHJF programs including the World Championship Hunter Rider Awards.

"We look forward to co-existing alongside the USHJA as we both commit to the future success and growth of equestrian sport," explained Louise Serio. "Our sport can only get stronger with the existence and collaboration of these two groups."
