John Eric Cole, a horseman, polo player and announcer, and proud father died of cancer on June 10, 2009 in Arlington, Virginia.

Mr. Cole was born in New York City in 1962 to Richard and Birgitta Cole. He attended the University of Connecticut, graduating in 1986 with a Bachelors degree in Animal Science.

Mr. Cole devoted his life to the training of horses and the people who ride them. An accomplished equestrian, Mr. Cole began his career on the hunter, jumper circuit, competing throughout the east coast in numerous competitions. Mr. Cole also achieved high rankings in arena and outdoor polo. He became a well-regarded coach and teacher of the sport, who managed several polo clubs and coached both the Yale and UConn teams.

Mr. Cole also became a sought-after announcer of polo matches, known for making the game accessible and exciting for the uninitiated. He was a familiar voice at tournaments in Bridgehampton and Greenwich.

Mr. Cole is survived by a son, Emerson Cole, his parents, a brother, Chris Cole of the District, his girlfriend Kelley Brown and her daughter Samantha of Warrenton, Virginia.
