THE PLAINS, VIRGINIA: Warrenton polo patron Alan Nash scored three points and sent his team to narrow victory in the June 20 feature match at Great Meadow.

Early summer rains have practically cancelled field polo so far this season, but the all-weather arena at Great Meadow continues to serve up weekly action at the regular Twilight Polo matches Saturdays. This week, Nash's Tigers eked out victory in the evening's feature polo match, beating rival Rock Hill.

The 10-9 victory was clinched in the final chukker with a big score from Doug Barnes. Barnes, who runs the Destination Polo school near The Plains, scored two total, including the game-winner. Argentinian 6-goal pro Jonas Larguia put up five points, including a big two-pointer shot from well beyond half-court.

Third-generation player Raymond Guest heads Rock Hill. Great Meadow Polo Club manager John Gobin, rated 7 goals, joined him Saturday along with Matt Sekara. Sekara's third chukker pony was named Best Playing Pony.

Altair and Chetwood Park played to an 11-11 tie in the evening's opening match.

Coming up in Virginia polo: Sunday, June 28, two big charity polo matches hope to kick off the grass season here. The Capital Hospice Polo Cup is on the Great Meadow field. Celebrity players include Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras, “America's Most Wanted” star John Walsh and designer Salvatore Ferragamo. Polo starts at 1 p.m.

The game benefits development of the first free-standing hospice facility in Loudoun County, on land donated to the nonprofit Capital Hospice by the Van Metre Companies.

General admission tickets are available along with VIP tickets and reserved fieldside tables under the sponsors tent. For tickets or information, call (703) 531-6216 or go online to www.capitalhospiceevents.org/hospicepolocup. General admission passes are through Great Meadow: www.GreatMeadow.org.

The fourth annual Polo For Piedmont event is at 11 a.m. at the Upperville Polo Field. The event benefits the Piedmont Child Care Center of Upperville. For tickets or more information call (540) 592-3908.
