Heavy Horses A Big Hit At Culpeper
Draft horse, mule show set Saturday
A throwback to the old days when the term “horsepower” meant it literally, the annual Old Dominion Draft Horse and Mule Show returns to Culpeper's Commonwealth Park this Saturday, Sept. 19 and Sunday Sept. 20.
It is the 31st annual Old Dominion show.
More than $8,000 in competition premiums are available in over 50 classes. Divisions range from in-hand conformation and showmanship, English and western pleasure, open jumpers, trail, games, coon mule jumping (from a standstill over as much as 5 feet or more), cart and hitch classes, cones, obstacles, log skid, sled and more. There will also be an antique farm wagon class.
Amazing Grace, a local trick mule soon to be featured in the Robert Duvall movie “Get Low,” will make a special guest appearance both days. Owner Steve Foster is a mule trainer based in Front Royal.
Divisions are for small and large draft breeds, half-drafts, donkeys and mules. Classes start at 9 a.m. each day.
