WARRENTON, VA - The Virginia Gold Cup Association announced today that the 80th Anniversary of the Virginia Gold Cup will be broadcast on ESPN on May 7 as part of the pre-Derby coverage of the 131st Running of the Kentucky Derby. The Virginia Gold Cup race will air between three and five p.m. on Saturday, May 7 as part of the “Kentucky Derby Special.”

“We are so delighted to be part of this national broadcast,” states Virginia Gold Cup Race Chairman and President William Allison. “We believe that this 80th anniversary of the Virginia Gold Cup is a significant accomplishment for the sport of steeplechase racing. The public will be able to witness two great races on one afternoon.”

Discussions to secure coverage of the Virginia Gold Cup have been ongoing for several years. To facilitate the broadcast, the Virginia Gold Cup has secured sponsorship from local television stations News Channel 8 and Washington’s ABC news affiliate -- WJLA. The stations will relay the live coverage from their satellite truck to field editors on site at Churchill Downs.

The Virginia Gold Cup, now in its 80th year, takes place on Saturday, May 7. Gates open at
10 am for pre-race entertainment. The first race gets underway at 12:30 pm. Tickets are $75 per car in advance, $85 per car on the week of the race (allows entry of car and up to 6 occupants).

The event is located just 45 minutes west of Washington, DC and is in close proximity to Dulles International Airport. To get there from Washington, DC, take I-66 west to The Plains exit. Turn left at the end of the ramp onto The Plains Road (Route 245 south), follow signs to Great Meadow which will be on your left.
