Encourage your legislators to stop slaughter-for-profit.
Americans don't eat horsemeat, so it may come as a shocking surprise to many that thousands of horses are slaughtered every year in the U.S. for human consumption in other countries. Horses have been our trusted companions and assisted us throughout history. They deserve a more humane and dignified end to their lives than being served as dinner.

Your help is needed to pass HR 297, a bill that would restore prohibitions on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild horses and burros. Earlier this year, a provision called the Burns Amendment was quietly added at the last moment to a large budget bill that opened the door to the slaughter of thousands of wild horses and burros. Individuals and corporations can now buy these animals with the clear intention of slaughtering them for profit.

Known as the Rahall-Whitfield legislation, HR 297 would ban the commercial sale and slaughter of wild, free-roaming horses and burros, a practice that until recently had been illegal for 33 years. Humane alternatives for these animals include adoption, sterilization, and relocation.

Philanthropist Henry Bergh founded the ASPCA in 1866 after witnessing the cruel beating of a cart horse. The ASPCA has long since continued the fight for horses and all animals and needs your support. Call your representataive, or send a letter via our Advocacy Center at www.aspca.org/lobby. America's wild, free-roaming horses and burros need your help!
