The Caroline County farm that produced horse-racing legends Secretariat and Riva Ridge is a step closer to becoming the next site of the State Fair of Virginia. The private nonprofit group that runs the fair filed plans recently with Caroline County to rezone the 377-acre Meadow Farm so that it can house the State Fair's three yearly festivals and other equestrian events. The fair is seeking a recreation and entertainment district zoning, a category the county created last year just for the fair. The fair hopes to move to the county by fall of 2007.

State Fair President Curry Roberts emphasized that the fair aims to preserve the equestrian history and the rural, farm like appearance of the property. The plans says that the fair will preserve Secretariat's foaling shed, along with the stables where Secretariat and Riva Ridge were housed. Secretariat won the 1973 Triple Crown, and Riva Ridge won the 1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
