Nationally-renowned saddle fitter Colleen Meyer of Advanced Saddle Fit will be at Sprieser Sporthorse, Marshall VA for fitting consultations. Meyer, a Qualified Saddler with the UK's Society of Master Saddlers, has worked with countless horses and riders of all shapes, sizes and disciplines. Her clients range from backyard riders to international competitors.

"Very few riders (and not all saddle fitters) have sufficient knowledge of saddle design and technology to evaluate comparative fit considerations accurately," said Meyer. "In this, they get little or no help from manufacturers."

Frustrated with that process, and with saddle manufacturers' increasing emphasis on rider appeal over horse fit, Meyer began working on her own line of saddles - called Detente - which combine affordability with top-quality and versatile design.

"Not every saddle maker/designer works with hundreds of horses in the field every year as we do," she said. "Many of them see only a small handful of horses, and rarely do they systematically follow the progress of individual horses to see how well particular saddle solutions work (or don’t work) for different types of horses over time. Since riders have credit cards and horses don’t, rider appeal nearly always trumps horse fit in designing saddles commercially."

Meyer will be available for fittings at Lauren Sprieser's Clearwater Farm, in Marshall VA February 12-14. Sprieser, a professional dressage rider and nationally recognized competitor, has worked with Meyer for years, and her international dressage horses have benefitted from Meyer's expertise.

"Colleen is a gifted fitter, and I never have to worry about my tack decisions when I'm going down centerline," she said. "My horses are able to do their jobs brilliantly - 70%+ scores at FEI, top placings at the National Dressage Championships - because of her."

Meyer also gives an evening lecture on Friday, February 12, 6pm, on saddle fit and design that riders of all disciplines will benefit from. The lecture is free with a contribution of a potluck dinner dish, and $5 without.
