Indian Run Farm owner David Semmes greeted his Endless Mountain in the winner's circle Saturday at the Old Dominion Hounds Point-to-Point. The Kentucky-bred gelding won the featured open timber under English apprentice Ben Garner.
Semmes was longtime master of the Old Dominion Hounds.
In the three-mile headliner, Endless Mountain was far out in front of True Blue Fingers when True Blue Fingers was pulled up. Across The Sky (Fritz Boniface) and More Fascination (Willie Dowling) were allowed to run as non-official starters -- footing at the Elkridge Harford races in Maryland was swampy, so trainer Jack Fisher asked permission to run his horses over the well-draining Ben Venue course. Across The Sky finishing ahead of Endless Mountain, though Garner said he did not push his horse to "beat" the unofficial starter. More Fascination was pulled up.
Also at Old Dominion, the nation's winningest amateur jump jockey, Gregg Ryan, made an abrupt decision to end his racing career. Ryan, who also works as an insurance investment specialist, steered his own Devil's Preacher to win over hurdles at Ben Venue, but said "with heavy heart" he decided on the way to the races Saturday morning to quit on a good note. He has a young son, John, who "means more to me than racing."
Upper level event rider Natalie Wales steered in her first race winner, Pizarro, in the ladies' timber.
