Bubble Economy Wins Virginia Gold Cup In Squeaker

Fisher adds a 10th notch on timber classic

By Betsy Burke Parker

THE PLAINS, VIRGINIA – Arcadia Stable's Bubble Economy pulled off a second score in the historic Virginia Gold Cup timber stakes, the nation's richest at $75,000. Held as the headline event at the May 1 meet at Great Meadow, the Gold Cup attracted a stellar field of 11 of the division's elite.
Favorite Seeyouattheevent was a late scratch; stablemate of Bubble Economy, the gelding suffered a slight injury winning the Middleburg Hunt Cup two weeks ago.
Bubble Economy rated off the early pace set by J.Alfred Prufrock and Patriot's Path, moving to contention with three to go. Bon Caddo actually jumped past Bubble Economy with a terrific jump at the last fence to threaten, but Bubble Economy, famous as a world-class “loafer” – a horse that “needs” company to be his best, according to winning jockey Paddy Young, sparked up with the challenge and picked up his pace to the wire to win by a half-length.
Bubble Economy claimed the timber crown in 2004 and 2008, when he set a single-season earnings record of $110,250. His first try over the Great Meadow timber, spring 2007, saw him fall hard, but he came back to win the next spring, and fall, in his record-setting season. Still, the bay son of Rakeen is a bit difficult to manage – he refused a fence in his very next start that fall, two weeks later over the very similar Pennsylvania Hunt Cup course, but returned to win at Camden's season closer to repair his reputation.
Last spring, Bubble Economy won the Chronicle Cup then finished second in both the Virginia and International cups. He was second in his only other 2010 start, just nosed out by South Monarch in the stake at My Lady's Manor.
