On Tuesday September 7th at 6:30pm horse owners and enthusiasts will have the opportunity to get a behind the scenes tour of the Chesapeake Bay Friendly Horse Farm Project. Through a grant from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and over fifty additional partners, the Prince William Soil & Water Conservation District was able to help install a number of conservation practices on Oakwood Farm in Gainesville, VA.

Come see for yourself the positive impacts that rotational grazing systems, automatic watering systems, sacrifice lot installation and use of innovative manure composting systems can have on your farm. You’ll also see the improvements in pasture cover, erosion control and wildlife habitats. The transformation is astounding! Learn from soil conservationists and the farm owner, Dr. Edith Kennedy, about how these best management practices have improved her farm – from improving horse health and welfare to minimizing the environmental impact of her horses on the land and even making her farm more chore-efficient.

If you would like to learn more about best management practices and how they can positively impact your horse farm please join us at Oakwood Farm on Tuesday September 7th, 2010 at 6:30pm. No cost to participate but RSVP is required by September 1st. For more information and directions to the tour, please Crystal Smith, Animal Science Extension Agent for more information at Crystal.Smith@vt.edu or 540-635-4549.

Virginia Cooperative Extension programs and employment are open to all, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, age, veteran status, national origin, disability, or political affiliation. An equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
