Overall fitness (both cardio and strength) is necessary for riding But, when you train a muscle group (core/abs) in such a way that they are in a constant state of holding/contraction, you interrupt your body's ability to function as a cohesive unit.
For riders this limits your ability to follow the horse’s movement with ease and communicate with the horse (use the aids) with subtlety and elegance. Further, we know that the horse's body mirrors the holding patterns in the rider's body. The rider's tense abs will contribute to tensing and holding in the horse thus limiting the horse's potential for full and fluid movement.
