Tri-County Feeds, Etc. (TCFE), a leading feed, tack, equestrian, and lifestyle store located in Marshall, Virginia, is known for its efforts to protect the environment. As of January 1, 2012 TCFE is implementing another ‘green’ component in the store by replacing paper bags with reusable totes. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the TCFE totes will be donated locally to the Goose Creek Association and the Piedmont Environmental Council.

When asked why the elimination of paper bags, Jeri L. Noel Jackson, Vice President of TCFE, provided some staggering statistics:

It takes 14 million trees to produce the 10 billion paper bags used by Americans every year. The paper bag manufacturing process uses thousands of gallons of water, as well as toxic chemicals that lead to acid rain and water pollution.

Nearly 80% of all paper bags end up in landfills where they do not biodegrade right away due to a lack of oxygen.

Thousands of marine animals and more than one million birds die each year as a direct result of pollution.

Ms. Jackson continued, “TCFE is dedicated to protecting the environment and does not want to contribute to the environmental damage caused by paper bags. Each of the reusable totes will replace four bags every time it is used. Over a lifetime—each tote will replace over 400 paper bags. A small change here at TCFE equals a big positive change for our environment.”

Internationally made by an American company and printed in the United States, TCFE’s totes are available for $3 each. For bulk items, TCFE provides recycled cartons. Customers are encouraged to use other reusable containers as desired.

TCFE’s 24,000 square-foot retail and warehouse facility that opened in 2007 was developed in an environmentally responsible way. “Making choices throughout the facility that protected our environment and limited natural resources wherever feasible was just the right thing to do,” said Bill Jackson, President of TCFE. Insulation used throughout the facility is cellulose of recycled newspaper. Stains and paints used are solvent-free, water-based products that are harmless to the environment and waterways and do not produce any indoor pollution. The carpet is made of recycled fiber. The bamboo and cork flooring are environmentally sound, renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable. Recovered wood counters and low-voltage lighting support TCFE’s commitment to environmentally responsible construction and furnishing.
