The Fairfax Hunt invites you to join us for a "different kind of horse show" - the Handy Hunter Show, June 2, 2012 at Turner Farm in Great Falls, VA. This friendly competition is designed for fox hunters and would-be foxhunters or anyone who just wants to have a little fun and try something new.

Riders and horses will compete over hunter courses designed by the judges to test the horses’ manners and hunting abilities. There will be four divisions: second flight, first flight, advanced and new this year, a junior division. This is a great opportunity for young riders and Pony Clubbers to get a taste of fox hunting in a safe and fun venue.

Like our junior division, the second flight division is specially designed for novice horses and riders and those interested in learning to become foxhunters. The judges will offer an extra level of advice and support to this group. There will be limited jumping, confined to logs and the low bank, and no fences over 2’ (most 18”).

All divisions will begin with a hack class, followed by a “mock“ hunt. Here, riders follow a fieldmaster as a group over selected obstacles in the Turner Farm cross-country course. After the mock hunt, competitors will perform a test using one half of the ring, one at a time, for the championship in each division. In addition to riding a prescribed “handy” course, riders may be asked to demonstrate a common fox hunting skill such as opening and closing a gate from horseback.

Schedule:
7:45 Open Schooling (ring and X-country)
9:00 Junior (riders may chose to jump 18" or 2'3")
10:30 First Flight (up to 2'6")

(not to start before noon)
12:00 Open Schooling (ring & X Country)
12:30 Advanced (up to 3')
2:00 Second Flight (up to 2')

COMPLIMENTARY TAILGATE PICNIC OPEN TO ALL ENTRIES FOLLOWING THE SHOW!

The Turner Farm, operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority, is a 52-acre park located on the site of a former dairy farm. Its rolling pastures and dairy barn complement the semi-rural community of Great Falls, Virginia. The land was saved from development by a public/private partnership started in 1994 to "Save-the-Farm." Features include: a novice level cross country course complete with water, ditch and bank complexes, a round pen and a large multi-purpose outdoor arena (200’ x 300’) with all-weather footing.

The Turner Farm is located at 925 Springvale Rd.,
Great Falls, VA 22066 (intersection of Georgetown Pike/Rt.193 and Springvale Road/Rt. 674).

Schooling (ring and cross country) will be available from 7:45 to 8:45 and again again after the completion of the first two divisions. The first division will begin at 9:00 am. Casual attire (ratcatcher or polo shirts). Entry Fees: $15 per class, $40 per division and $15 to school in ring or cross country course. BONUS! All entries will receive a certificate for one FREE cap with the Fairfax Hunt during the 2012-2013 season.
