Dr. Rosemary Smith will describe how different types of sporting prints were made, how they were used, and how they changed over time. This lecture promises to be both educational and entertaining as she discusses the subjects and technical differences of this highly collectable art form, using examples from the outstanding Mellon Collection of Sporting Prints.
Dr. Smith received her PhD in the History of Art from the University of Virginia, and is an expert on both Eastern and Western printmaking history and techniques. She has photographed and catalogued the sporting prints in the Mellon Collection and wrote the VMFA docent manual on the Mellon Collection of Sporting Art. A selection of sporting prints from the Mellon Collection will be available for guests to view after the lecture.
