Legacy’s American Mustang Academy (LAMA) is a truly unique experience for your young rider. We welcome students from 5-18 years old, we provide a fun and exciting atmosphere where they can learn everything they want to know about horses!
Legacy’s American Mustang Academy
Many riders have learned the basic skills required to allow them to “sit pretty” on their “mounts” and they have never really been given the chance to work with their horse as a team. Legacy’s American Mustang Academy (LAMA) will teach students to understand what their partner is saying and communicate their own wishes effectively, in a peaceful way, without harsh or unnecessary aids.
How are the Mustangs involved?
LAMA's name was created to reflect its mission which is to bring together America’s youth and its wild horse, the Mustang, to allow them to learn from each other. Horses are wonderful teachers; patient, kind and forgiving. This means that the American Mustang is that and more because they are a living, breathing piece of our nation’s history!
Of course all of this is done in a safe environment with experienced Legacy trainers there to supervise and assist the students every step of the way! To ensure the most effective program for each Academy member, the younger students will work with more domesticated horses to learn all of their basic skills and the Mustangs may be brought in by the Legacy trainers for a demonstration. Gentled Mustangs will be used in the program for older students who are learning more specific skills required to train horses.
What will my student learn at LAMA?
When your child becomes an Academy member at LAMA, he or she will learn every aspect of horsemanship, including:
Horse care and management
Anatomy
Physiology
Psychology
Rider equitation
Driving
Training principles
Along with these important principles of horsemanship, your child will also learn techniques and tips on how to create their own business plan!
The older students will begin the program with a gentled and trained Mustang. Once sufficiently prepared, the students will begin working with an untouched Mustang under supervision of Legacy trainers. Once a student completes all of Legacy's American Mustang Academy requirements they will be prepared to enter into Legacy's Certification Program or become a trainer, as a participant in the TIP (Trainer Incentive Program) through the Mustang Heritage Foundation. If a student does not plan to enter into a horse training career, they will gain skills and a foundation for managing any business.
The younger students will do their learning on a domesticated horse or a completely trained Mustang. The curriculum for these students will cover many of the above topics; however, it will be appropriate for the age group.
