Looking to improve your teaching abilities in dressage? Whether you are planning on being assessed to become a USEA Certified Instructor or want to partake in an opportunity to learn more about instructing dressage, this Workshop will prove beneficial. As a Candidate Instructor, you will be guided by the USEA ICP Faculty in teaching the principles of dressage techniques to demo riders over the course of two days. Dressage Riders and Instructors also have a unique opportunity to participate as Demo Riders or to audit the Workshop.
Join us at Playland Equestrian Center in Union Bridge, MD on January 21-22, 2013 (Mon & Tues) for a USEA Instructor Certification Program Level I/II Workshop in Dressage, facilitated by top USEA Instructor and ICP Faculty, Jerry Schurink.
Jerry is a founding member of the USEA ICP, and is certified as a Level 3 Instructor, as well as a USDF “L” Program participant. His professional experience began in 1979 upon receiving his Beriter Certification, the college degree for riders and trainers in Germany. He was named the United States Dressage Federation Young Rider of the Year in 1980 and in 1982-84 was selected to train at the U.S. Equestrian Team facility in Hamilton, Mass., with Jack LeGoff.In 1984-86, Schurink was co-coach of the USEA Area 1 Young Rider championship team, resulting in bronze, silver and gold medals respectively. In 1997, he was invited to train with U.S. Eventing Team Coach, Captain Mark Phillips in Millbrook, N.Y. Since 2002, Jerry has been Coaching IHSA teams, beginning at University of Massachusetts, where he was also the Director of Riding and Equine Studies. In 2008, Schurink led the UMass IHSA team to the Region 3, Zone 1 title and a trip to the national show when his team defeated perennial riding power Mount Holyoke College for the zone title. Schurink is now at Bridgewater College, and in his first season with the Eagles, the program won its second straight regional title and sent two riders to individual competition at the IHSA National Show in Raleigh, N.C.
The Workshop days will begin at 8am and end around 5pm. The first day will include safety/equipment for dressage, the German Training Scale concepts and techniques, a model teaching by the Faculty, and practice teaching by Instructor Candidates, followed by an evening of collaboration with fellow Candidates and Faculty. The second day will include a review of position and aides, demands of the dressage tests for appropriate levels, discuss relationship between flatwork and jumping, model teaching of exercises, practice teaching of exercises by Candidates, and concluding with one-on-one feedback with the faculty.
The Workshop total cost is $400 for Instructor Candidates, $50 per day to audit, and free to participate as a demo rider with your own horse.
